Field Recordings: Bario, Sarawak, Malaysia. 2008.

An explanation: In Spring 2008, I had the extreme pleasure of traveling with UGA anthropologist Pete Brosius to Borneo and up into the Kelabit highlands, visiting both the Kelabit and Penan peoples. The Kelabit are former headhunters and one of the Orang Ulu ("headwater people"), and the Penan are a nomadic tribe which have been the focus of Dr. Brosius's work for decades. We spent a week there, at first staying with David and Lucy Labang in the "central" village of the region, Bario (renown for its rice and only accessible by small plane). Then, we went to Pa' Lungan over a 3-hour water buffalo trail, and from there into the forest with a Penan named Lai and his family. A truly, miraculously beautiful place.
